Dance In Schools:
Residencies, Workshops, Professional Development for Educators
I come to your school for a few days, a week, two weeks, or more, meeting with 4 to 5 classes per day. I work intensively with the same students every day, introducing movement “games” which explore Elements of Dance, and teaching dances of the focus culture in a historical/cultural context. Sometimes this involves the use of special clothing or musical instruments, which help cover state and national dance curriculums in an exciting way.
Following the activities, I lead a discussion about what we have just experienced, allowing students to use their own words to describe what they have learned. I also write key concepts the students have mentioned on the board, which they record in their Dance Journals.
Upon completion of learning about a specific culture, we then discuss and write about using Elements of Dance and the specific purposes of the learned dances. Students may use their Dance Journals for creative writing or drawing about their dance experiences. When two or more cultures are explored, students compare and contrast the dance styles using learned dance vocabulary. A culminating performance or Family Dance can be included in longer residencies.
The cultures and time periods to be explored are up to you, and I can easily tie dance in with other areas of the curriculum.
“I can’t imagine a more successful residency than this one. I hope we can continue to take advantage of this type of ‘hands on’ interactive learning.”
“This program was one of the most successful I have witnessed in twenty-nine years of education. The students mastered the objectives and enjoyed every minute of the program.”
I come to your school during school hours, after school, or to a home-school situation and provide dance experiences for sessions lasting from 1 hour to an entire day. You choose the types of dance you wish to explore and I build a program around your goals. I can work with you on age appropriate dances that will be fun and will also challenge your students in new, exciting ways.
“Deborah is a professional in every sense of the word. She is not only a skilled dance instructor, but she also has excellent classroom management techniques, responding to each student individually while engaging the entire group, fostering leadership, and nurturing collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking.”
Professional Development for Educators:
No more boring, lecture-based P.D. classes! At my workshops for teachers we all dance, collaboratively create, and learn through experience. I get rave reviews on these events, both for the knowledge gained and the safe environment that is created for trying new things. Workshops may last from one hour to several days. Talk to me about what you wish to achieve and I will build a class to suit your needs.
“Excellent - one of the best. Super PD!”
“Deborah teaches children and adults in a way that fosters respectful learning. While sitting under her as a student at a professional development session and as a teacher watching her work with my students, I always felt like she gave adults and children the opportunity to learn, instead of just loading them down with information."
